Wigginton Karate Club members won nine medals, including two gold, at the Japan Shotokan Karate Association National Championships held at Luton.

Backy Hargreaves won gold in the in the youth mixed kata 6-4th kumite and bronze in the kyu, while Jack Smith won gold in the cadet 16-19 year-old 7th kyu kata and bronze in the kumite.

Serena Sawdon-Holland was within a whisker of beating the world champion in the mixed kata children third kyu and came home with a silver medal.

Jenny Dorman won silver in the youth mixed kata 6-4th kyu. Anna Raybould won two bronze medals, in the youth mixed kata third kyu and over, and in the. kumite. Emily Robinson won bronze in the mixed kata children 6-4th kyu.

Fourth places were achieved by Ryan Hurst (children 6-4th kyu), Chloe Basseux (children 9-12 kata and kumite), and Lee Coulthard (youth mixed kata).

There were 50 different divisions in the championships and over 200 competitors. The Wigginton competitiors are coached by Paul Wright and the club trains at Wigginton Primary Schooll on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7-9pm.
