THE performance of Fiddler On The Roof by York Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society last month was a big success, containing excellent material which was the result of good team work.

My special thanks to Eric Daines as Tevye, the milkman. I was delighted with the scenery and set design with costumes appropriate to the way people lived in Russia in the early part of the 20th century. I especially enjoyed the Cossack-style dancing which I hoped would go on longer, and the wedding scene. Fiddler must surely be one of the most difficult musicals to perform on stage. However, York Opera have proved to me that it can be done with the greatest of success and I wish to express my thanks to all concerned in working towards a fine production.

...I MUST congratulate the York Amateurs on such an excellent professional production of Fiddler On The Roof. I really couldn't believe how much the standard and quality of production had improved. Having seen their previous productions, which have never been up to the standard of the Light Opera - this production has truly put them back on top!

I was therefore shocked to read the review in the Press (October 11) - was this man watching the same show? It was one of the most touching shows I have watched in a long while. The performances were lovely, especially Tevye (Eric Daines).

I also believe the director and choreography were stunning, so much better than the usual productions the Amateurs have put on.
