YORK is set for a jobs bonanza after a furnishings giant announced plans to move into the city.

More than 100 new jobs will be created at the former Homebase site at Clifton Moor Retail Park, when soft furnishings chain Dunelm opens a new superstore early next year.

The Leicester-based firm, which is Britain's largest independent specialist fabric and textile retailer, will take over the 37,000 sq ft unit vacated by Homebase.

It is also investing a substantial sum in the refurbishment of the site.

Dunelm developments director James Rowell said he saw the York move as an exciting opportunity.

He said: "York is an area we identified as ideal for the company as there are no other stores there like Dunelm.

"I'm confident the new York store will be very well received. Our new stores make a significant impact on local areas, bringing large numbers of very welcome jobs, increasing footfall and, in turn, boosting local economies.

"Wherever we have opened a store, we are still there and have become an important part of the retail community."

Gillian Cruddas, president of York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, said she was "delighted" with the investment.

She said: "It's excellent news.

"I'm pleased that the former Homebase site has been re-used to good affect.

"We hope the investment has spin-offs for other businesses in the city."

Dunelm is due to launch a major recruitment drive to search for candidates to fill full and part-time positions.

Mr Rowell said: "We're looking for people who are reliable, honest, hardworking and well-motivated with friendly personalities, a firm belief in team effort and a high level of customer service."
