A MOTHER-of-four has told of her shock after seeing two men injecting drugs in broad daylight close to her house in York - and says police should have done more to catch them.

The 40-year-old woman, who did not want to be named for fear of reprisals, said she felt physically sick when she saw the pair, aged in their mid-20s, sitting in a car at Clifton.

She rang the police immediately, informing them of the make, colour and registration number of the car, but she said no one got back to her and the car left the scene within 45 minutes.

But Sgt Colin Ventress, of York Police, said the call was taken very seriously. An officer was sent to the scene in the Kingsway North area of Clifton, and investigations were being pursued.

The woman said: "I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

"The lad that was in the driving seat had his arm up, as if he had just had an injection.

"And the other one had this tin with a needle in it.

"I had my little boy with me, he's only five, and my teenage son had also seen them.

"But when I phoned the police, it was like they didn't want to know.

"I went outside after they had gone to see if there were any needles lying about. You just don't know what's going to be there.

"I felt physically sick when I saw it, I know people do it, but in broad daylight and in the middle of the street?"

Sgt Ventress said: "A lady did ring us, an officer did go, but the car had left the scene.

"Obviously if there's a possibility of drug-taking, especially in broad daylight, we will look at it seriously.

"We would encourage anybody with information in relation to drug misuse to contact the police station, giving their own name or anonymously."
