Parents in York are being reminded that they have only two months left to register their children for primary school under new City of York Council arrangements.

Parents of children born between September 1, 1997 and August 31, 1998, are being asked to contact their local or preferred primary school for an admissions form and a copy of Guide For Parents - with all forms having to be returned by Friday, January 18, next year by the latest.

Anyone seeking help or more information should contact the council's admissions office on 01904 554248.

Council education officer Mark Ellis said: "The majority of parents in York get the primary school of their preference, but returning the form late may jeopardise this."

Mr Ellis said the council had brought forward the date of registering children with primary schools to help parents and schools plan earlier. Schools across the city have already been busy attempting to contact parents through local nursery groups and playgroups, but anyone with a child of this age should act as soon as possible to get a place in a school for that child."
