MY butcher friend Philip is not a frequent visitor to the city centre. When he is there at lunchtime he makes a beeline for Blake Street. Why not join me, he suggested. Why not indeed.

On our way we collected a mutual friend, Judith, who as a young mother was familiar with the McDonald's procedure. As a novice I needed guidance.

The venue was busy when we arrived. The counter is far from the door and a comprehensive selection of food is displayed on wall boards. Quite confusing for the novice.

Philip was very direct ordering two small cheeseburgers, chips and tea (£2.99). Judith chose a chicken burger and coffee, while I was recommended to try a quarter pound burger with chips and tea. I got lost trying to price these items but paying for the three of us I had some change from £9.

I was impressed by the speed of service and the fact that we all received hot burgers with freshly-cooked and crispy chips.

The assistant who served us, Jessica, was pleasant, smiled and gave us plenty of eye contact.

When she discovered that the coffee pot was almost empty we were informed that more was being brewed and that she would bring it to us. She was true to her word.

If you expect to eat off plates this is not the place for you. Food is presented in disposable wrapping and fingers are to be used. Regular users will know that serviettes and straws are located at central points around the restaurant.

Patrons are asked to clear their own tables. Although I did not spot any tables being wiped, they all appeared very clean. There was also a regular patrol with a brush and dustpan removing anything that had found its way to the floor.

Perhaps I should allow my grandchildren to take me here on another occasion when it is less busy and I can read the menu at leisure to find out what is included in standard orders and what count as extras.

Toilets are upstairs, which could be a hassle for people with pushchairs. However, I located a toilet for the disabled on the ground floor.

Why, I asked Philip was he so keen on McDonald's? Because, he said, the standard of hygiene is superb and the quality of the product high. I certainly agreed.
