STARS of the silver screen were the inspiration for student hairdressers at York College's annual competition.

This year's York College Hair and Beauty competition took place at Ikon/Diva at Clifton Moor and the audience included city employers as well as friends and relatives.

There were five categories with the total look team competition being given a movies theme to work with.

With five prizes up for grabs, the pressure was on for the students in the nerve-wracking contest.

Denise Morrison, curriculum leader for hair and beauty, said: "The students are under enormous pressure to perform their hair and beauty skills well. The competition rules are strict and there's no room for mistakes.

"Those students who won the different categories in this competition will go forward to a regional heat in Scarborough in March. The winners from the regional heat will then go forward to the national finals held in Birmingham in May."

The competition involved full and part-time NVQ Level 1 and 2 hairdressing students, combined level 2 and 3 hairdressing and beauty students, as well as NVQ level 2 and 3 beauty therapy and media make-up students. The media make-up students provided demonstrations throughout the competition, as did the York hair salon, Evolve.
