LAURA Birkinshaw has added to her growing reputation with a double medal haul at the English Schools' Badminton Association Under 13s' competition in Kettering.

The 12-year-old member of the York Railway Institute club picked up a bronze in the singles and a gold in the doubles with a partner picked on the day.

In the singles, Laura, who is already the York and District U16s champion, was only denied a shot at the final - where the gold and silver medals were up for grabs - after losing 17-15 in a nip-and-tuck semi-final encounter.

However, she made amends in the doubles despite having never played with partner Rebecca Smith (Warwick) before.

In fact, the Easingwold School pupil had beaten her partner in the quarter-final of the singles, but the pair complimented each other brilliantly to storm to the gold medal.

Laura's mother Amanda Birkinshaw said: "Laura did really well. She played some of the best badminton I have ever seen her play."

Laura, who lives at Clifton Moor, is now looking forward to her next tournament in Macclesfield on January 19.

Cross-Country

York athletes enjoyed pleasant weather and conditions for a change for their cross-country match against the East Riding at Knavesmire on Saturday.

All three girls' age groups were won and the boys' age groups lost. Those who had endured the very tough course at Rotherham the previous week had clearly gained strength from that ordeal and looked much sharper on the more realistic Knavesmire course.

The fixture also provided good race preparation for Saturday's North Yorkshire Schools Championships at Skipton.

Race times for Skipton are - noon, intermediate boys; 12.15pm, intermediate girls; 12.30pm, year seven boys; 12.45pm, year seven girls; 1pm, junior boys; 1.15pm, junior girls; 1.30pm, senior girls; 1.45pm, senior boys.

From Skipton, teams will be selected to represent North Yorkshire against Humberside on Saturday, February 2, and for the English Schools Championships at Chelmsford in March.

Please return the entry form to Wayne Isherwood at Sherburn High School by Friday, February 8.

Miscellaneous

The North Yorkshire U16 football team is scheduled to play Cleveland on Monday, January 21, at the Scarborough FC.

The All Saints U15 basketball team played Thorncliffe School, Barrow in the National Basketball competition and they won 68-44. This puts them into the last eight of the competition.

The school's Basketball League is now approaching the final stages of the competition, so it is essential all schools send in their results as soon as possible to Colin Raper at Bootham School, York.
