ANDY Tordoff, the defending champion and No 1 seed is out of York Men's Veterans' Squash Championships.

The Milford player conceded having got to match ball last night against Paul Turner.

Tordoff conceded because he found out only yesterday that work commitments would prevent him taking any further part. Paul Turner, the 2000 champion, came into the competition after the withdrawal of clubmate Arthur Williams.

Turner battled hard to take the opening two games, but Tordoff stepped up the pace and won the third for the loss of only one point and four handouts.

Again in the fourth Tordoff took advantage of any loose shot and gradually won point after point with accurate driving and cross court drops.

Turner fought hard but gained ten handouts before scoring, showing how much Tordoff was in control. He took the game 9-2 to level the score.

The opening of the fifth saw both players cover the court well and making excellent rallies with an array of different shots and seemed balanced as they reached 3-2 and 4-3.

A run of four points saw Tordoff get his first match ball and that was when he conceded - the first time anyone knew about it. Turner will now face No 4 seed Brian McRobbie who beat Wigginton's Nick Clifford 3-1.

Kirkbymoorside's Dave Goddard took the No 3 seed to a fifth set. Goddard led 2-1, Thompson won the fourth 9-0 then finish the match 9-6.

No 2 seed Steve Hodgson had a three-game to nil victory oover RI's Mike Sellars. Sellars rallied well in the second and drop volleys played with little pace paid dividends as the score went to 5-5, but Hodgson went on to take the game 9-5 and prevented Sellars from winning any further points.
