NORTH Yorkshire Under 16s' hopes of reaching the final stages of the FA Premiership English Schools' county championships were sliced apart at Scarborough's McCain Stadium.

The North Yorkshire ranks had to beat visitors Cleveland to have any chance of getting through the competition's Northern Counties area group stage.

All looked well when Hambleton/Richmond's Dave Cooke struck a composed finish past the Cleveland goalkeeper from team-mate Sam Vernalls' pass. Shortly into the second-half Cooke raced clear only to be foiled by a fine save.

But 22 minutes into the second-half Cleveland levelled after a melee and then eight minutes from time the visitors struck a cruel second to end the qualification tilt of the North Yorkshire hosts.
