CELEBRATED York City supporters Shed Seven are set to play their biggest gig in York for nearly three years - and it's in all aid of the Minstermen.

The rockers, who have a string of hits behind them, have announced they are to play a one-off concert at York's Barbican Centre on Friday, March 22 - with tickets going on sale today.

And the lads are not charging a penny to put on the show, and instead have promised that all the money raised will go straight into the Save City campaign coffers.

City of York Council, who own the Barbican Centre, are also hiring out the venue for free.

The gig - for which a support act is being lined up - is sure to be a 1,860-capacity sell-out, and Save City Campaign committee member Pete Brandon said they hoped it would raise £20,000 for the campaign to rescue the club.

"Shed Seven are playing for nothing, which is a marvellous gesture and again proves they are true fans, while the Barbican and the Council have been very helpful indeed," he told the Evening Press.

"We will have to cover other costs such as the PA system, lighting and rigging, but we expect it to be a great success and a massive boost for the campaign.

"It is a one-off gig by Shed Seven and it will be a great night. Everyone has been so helpful it has been brilliant. We can only say a big thank you to the band and the Council for doing this."

The gig is expected to be the Sheds' biggest homecoming since they last performed at the Barbican in June 1999. It will be their first in York since they played at College of Ripon and York St John in March last year as part of a warm-up for a tour.

Tickets for the concert cost £15 and can be bought from the Barbican, telephone York (01904) 656688.
