THE Pocklington Sevens are on the horizon once again.

The much-loved annual seven-a-side contest - the longest running in the county - is held on Good Friday every year and attracts teams from across the north.

And this season's contest, to be held on March 29 at Percy Road, should be no different with a feast of rugby set to be on offer.

With beer, food and running rugby, there will be something for everyone.

The Army seven's side won the competition last season, edging out a strong Hull team which included a number of former Pocklington players.

The Quality Street Gang, the area's seven-a-side specialists, were defeated semi-finalists.

TALKING of tournaments, the York Annual Veterans Tournament is all set for next month.

The competition specifically for the more mature player - over 35 - will take place at Clifton Park on Sunday, April 14.

Teams can still enter with further information available from Tim Godson on 01904 706763.

St Peter's School, York, have a date with destiny next Saturday.

The school's Under 15s rugby team will head down to the Rugby Football Union development centre in Castlecroft, Birmingham, for the semi-final of the Daily Mail Cup.

The boys will line-up against Street-based Millfield School at 1.30pm, with a place at Twickenham in the final the prize for the winners.

The school party - made up of 22 players and three members of staff - will travel down on Friday and stay overnight before playing the game.

The other semi-final will see Outwood Grange, from Wakefield, take on St Paul's School, Barnes.

The St Peter's School squad: Michael Morris, William Butler, Marcus Denison, Jason Burton, Peter Stower, Rory Robertson, Alastair MacLeod, Thomas Woolsey, Edward Hilling, Ben Hough, Jacob Troughear, Mark Jagger, Michael Miller, James Pang, Charles Parry, Joseph Bucklow, Robin Johnson, John Ramsden, Andrew Slingsby, Richard Thomas, Peter Wackett, Duncan Watt.

THERE were high fives at Pontefract RUFC on Wednesday when St Peter's School pupils Will Butler, Alastair MacLeod, Thomas Wolsey, Mark Jagger and Ben Hough all started for the Yorkshire Under 15s.

The school had been proud to have the five included in the squad, but for all of them to start the match against Lancashire was a special achievement.

Mark Jagger added to the joy as he crossed for a try as Yorkshire defeated their Red Rose neighbours 17-12.

HARROGATE fly-half Lee Cholewa needed just a conversion from today's clash over in Orrell to bring up 200 points for the season.

The former Durham University No 10 has so far chipped in with 198 points, but that was all set to change today.

Cholewa did have the chance to break the 200-barrier against Wharfedale last Saturday, but his easily kickable penalty in injury time was caught by the wind and blown wide.
