ON February 6, 50 enthusiastic visitors turned up at City Art Gallery, York, to hear Rodney Anness's delightfully instructive lunchtime talk on William Etty.
This was the largest attendance for a talk since the imposition of entrance charges almost two years ago.
Etty was not only a fine artist, who achieved international recognition in his own time. He is remembered with gratitude and affection by the people of York for leading the valiant struggle to save our city walls and bars from destruction. If his statue is now sadly decayed, his true monument is there today for all to see and enjoy.
As to the denizen of York, George Hudson, 'The Railway Knave', he has his lasting monument too; the great hole he knocked in the walls that William Etty fought so hard to preserve.
