RAIL misery returned to North Yorkshire again today as commuters were hit by yet another round of industrial action.

Station and clerical staff at Arriva Trains Northern have begun a 48-hour strike in protest at a management pay offer.

Tomorrow, they will be joined by conductors also striking in protest at pay and conditions.

The action, which will involve nearly 1,000 staff over the two days of disputes, will mean more rail chaos for long-suffering passengers.

The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) said services throughout North Yorkshire would be severely disrupted by the strikes with no services at all on some routes and much reduced services on others.

The Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) which represents many of the station staff, said it regretted having to take further industrial action but Arriva's failure to make a meaningful offer had made it unavoidable.

An Arriva spokeswoman said the company hoped to run 55 per cent of its services during tomorrow's conductor strike.
