York and District Indoor Bowls Club's Shirley Stacey and Iain Boyle beat England players Ann Harrison and Gordon Charlton before losing in the quarter-finals of the Golden Charter National Mixed Pairs Bowls Championship at Bedford

Stacey and Boyle lost five shots at the second end against Harrison and English outdoor singles champion Charlton, from Folkestone, but scored on five of the next six ends to lead 10-7. The York pair went 16-12 ahead but their opponents drew level at 19-19. Stacey and Boyle then scored a single, double and single to win 23-19.

In the quarter-finals the York pair lost 17-15 to Niall Currie and Penny Peile, from Cumbria club, Carlisle.

It was 8-8 after 11 ends and then the Cumbrians scored six shots in five ends to lead 14-9.

Stacey and Boyle responded with a treble and double to pull level at 14-14.

The Cumbrians then scored a double and although Stacey and Boyle clawed back a single but the Ccarlisle duo scored a single on the last end to win.
