THE man suspected of making threats against the Archbishop of York is in hospital voluntarily, police said today.

But a spokesman said he could be sectioned under the Mental Health Act if he tried to leave.

The 67-year-old unnamed man from Harrogate made threats against the primate, Dr David Hope, over the telephone to police on Saturday and was later arrested.

More than a dozen officers, some with dogs, surrounded the outside of York Minster when Dr Hope was officiating at an Easter vigil on Saturday.

Armed police units were also put on stand-by.
