FANS of York Wasps are organising a major music event to raise money to help resurrect the rugby league club.

Labelled "WaspAid 2002", the gig is planned to feature more than a dozen local bands and has already attracted support from supporters and musicians alike.

The money raised will go to the Wasps' supporters' trust, which is being set up with the aim of getting the Northern Ford Premiership outfit readmitted to the Rugby Football League following the closure of the club by the old board last month.

Wasps supporter Andy Hall, who is organising the bash, said: "I am trying to organise a band marathon in aid of the Wasps supporters' trust.

"I have noticed that the state of York sport is very much like the state of York music - no-one can afford to play. With this in mind, I've decided to try to do something about both.

"The event I have in mind would involve as many local bands as we can fit into one night. Even if bands just turn up and do a couple of songs, that would be great."

York City supporters organised a "Save City" gig involving chart rockers Shed Seven - which turned into a "Celebrate City" gig after the club were saved - and Wasps fans want to do likewise, but this time with more bands. The idea is to get the Wasps as much money as possible and also promote local bands and give them a decent stage.

"This event is attracting a lot of attention from the local band fraternity," said Hall, a member of York-based group Griffins Bridge.

"I already have 15 bands willing to play and more will give a decision once a venue and date is confirmed."

City of York Council allowed the Sheds to play at the Barbican Centre for free in aid of the Minstermen, and Hall is hopeful the Wasps might be given similar support.

"I have full backing from the supporters' trust and every band I've contacted think it's a good idea and would like to be involved," said Hall.

"Messages I've put on various websites have got some surprisingly good replies. For example, a coach will be put on to the event from Hunslet Hawks, Leeds Rhinos have offered their support and we even received a message from the United States.

"I'm sure it would be a huge success for everybody involved."

Wasps are still urgently in need of sponsorship and donations to help resurrect the club in time.

All donations should be sent to the Keep Wasps Buzzing Campaign, c/o Hague & Dixon Solicitors, Bank House, 1 The Square, Stamford Bridge, York YO41 1AG. Cheques should be made payable to York RLFC Supporters Club.
