A COURAGEOUS North Yorkshire man who helped catch a criminal on the run from police will tomorrow be honoured with a posthumous award.

Judith Meyler will accept the Chief Constable's Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of her late husband, Sean, and another for her own assistance to police during the incident.

The couple, who both had heart conditions, spotted a youth in the backyard of their Norton home in May 2000.

But when they realised he was being chased by police, they came to the assistance of PC Anna Aldrich in restraining him until back-up arrived.

Mrs Meyler said that at the time, neither of them thought of the risks of tackling the man, a habitual burglar from Teesside, who was later jailed for 15 months.

"She was just a young woman on her own and he struggled and was kicking out at her so we did whatever we could."

Mr Meyler died of a heart attack later that year, and his widow, who has twice undergone open heart surgery and is fitted with a pacemaker, said: "I think I owe it to Sean to go and collect the award for both of us."

PC Aldrich said she was delighted the couple's bravery had been recognised.

"Obviously when any member of the public help us out we are always extremely grateful.

Ryedale Community Safety Officer PC Terry Triffitt, based in Malton, will also be honoured at tomorrow's ceremony at the force's police headquarters with an award for long service.

A team of four detectives will receive commendations for their part in the Operation Pudsey investigation into allegations of child abuse in two North Yorkshire children's homes at Harrogate and Ripon, which led to the convictions of six offenders.
