The success of racists such as Le Pen in France and the election of three BNP councillors at Burnley must teach us all an important lesson.
Democracy is a fragile and precious thing. We have had universal suffrage in this country for less than one hundred years. It is not guaranteed and should never be taken for granted.
We all enjoy social, economic, political and legal rights that our forefathers had to fight for and we must take responsibility for ensuring their continuance by participating at election times and going out to vote.
Councillor Ruth Potter,
Constantine Avenue,
Tang Hall, York.
...BY claiming David Blunkett was wrong to use the word "swamping", by sacking Tory MP Ann Winterton, by deciding to stop electing mayors after the victories of Ray Malton and The Hartlepool "monkey" - the mainstream UK politicians are actually helping the BNP and NF to win more votes.
The danger for most of us comes not from the far right - but from the politically correct.
David Quarrie,
Lynden Way, York.
