AT daybreak today hundreds of soldiers and students from across the country started to race the sun around North Yorkshire in an effort to raise cash for charity.

Ten teams of men and women were taking part in the 15-stage event which was being hosted and organised by 2 Signal Regiment based in York.

The teams were running, cycling, marching, swimming and canoeing over 182 miles of North Yorkshire's most scenic roads, forests, rivers and lakes.

The aim was to set off as the sun was rising and complete the course by sunset tonight. The day's finale was to be a 3km stretcher race carrying a 40kg load.

Lieutenant Colonel Ian Cameron-Mowat, Commanding Officer of 2 Signal Regiment, said: "This is a most testing and challenging race that appeals to soldiers from all over the country.

"Over the last 13 years we have raised a total of £87,000 for charities, many of them in North Yorkshire and I congratulate all the sportsmen and women who have taken part."

He thanked Nestl UK Ltd for its continued sponsorship.
