YOUNG decorator Ian Browne has won a top award in a regional competition.

Ian, from New Earswick, York, was named Decorator of the Year at the regional Skillbuild competition, held in Bradford.

He works at Dodsworths, in York, and is an NVQ Level Three painting and decorating student at York College.

He recently came second in the Apprentice Trainee 2002 Award, given by the Association of Craft Teachers.

NVQ Level Two student Darren Simpson, who works for Seddons of York, came second, and Richard Moyse, who works for WH Bonney, of York, was awarded the runner-up position.

Bricklaying students also returned victorious. NVQ Level Two student James Barron, who works for Fulford Builders, in York, finished in second place. Gary Smales, who works for Craig Dykes Property Developments Ltd, of Selby, was a runner-up in the junior competition.
