AN incinerator which has been derelict since the 1970s and is often criticised as an eyesore is to remain where it is, despite demolition work taking place at its site in York.

The metal tower at City of York Council's waste disposal site, in Foss Islands Road, will stay until development plans are submitted for the whole site, a spokesman said today.

The Evening Press reported last week that another incinerator, a brick building at the rear of the site, is to be demolished to make room for more storage space at the depot.

The spokesman said: "The reason for the demolition of the brick building is simply that we need the space. The tower has been redundant since the 1970s, but it will stay for the time being. It will ultimately go when there are firm plans for redevelopment. The council is marketing the site for retail use."

- The building to be demolished was not the one pictured in Saturday's Evening Press. We apologise for the error.
