A CARNIVAL atmosphere is coming to York this weekend when a fundraising masquerade ball takes place in the city.

Last-minute touches are being made to the stunning Venetian- theme decorations for Saturday's Sunflower Masquerade Ball in aid of St Leonard's Hospice.

Life-size harlequins, masks and streamers have been created by Harrisons Signs, of Green Lane, Clifton, to greet revellers at York Racecourse.

The £65-a-head event will include a banquet, dancing to the Casablanca Boys, a casino and numerous other attractions including the chance to win holidays and vouchers to many local restaurants.

The last Sunflower Ball for York's hospice, a Millennium special in 2000, raised more than £27,000 towards the hospice's appeal for a new £2 million in-patient annexe and redevelopment.

This appeal reached its target last year and the hospice is preparing for an official opening of the new premises in July.

Janet Morley, fundraising manager for St Leonard's, said money from the event will go towards running costs.

She said: "The ball is an important fundraiser for the hospice, and this year will be better than ever.

"Funds raised go directly towards the care of patients, as we need over £1.7 million every year to fund their care to the best of our ability. We are extremely grateful to the voluntary organising committee, to the sponsors and to the guests and we are sure everyone will have a fantastic time."
