REGARDING the destruction of meadowland and wildlife habitats in York, I wish to endorse the sentiments expressed by Mick Phythian (Letters, May 18).
The people responsible for the reclamation of the "backies" in Clifton are to be congratulated, but why are they so hell-bent on the destruction of the land in Osbaldwick? This is not only a natural wildlife area but also contains some ancient ridge-furrow fields.
They cannot justify this by claiming these fields have been ruined by ploughing, (paragraph 3, section 16 of the latest City of York Council report on the area). This area has not been ploughed in living memory.
Coun W H Hall,
The Village,
Osbaldwick,
York.
