TRAFFIC tailed back along a main route into York after a huge crane got stuck at a busy junction today.

Police sealed off part of Fulford Road after the 100ft-long, 120-ton piling rig, which had been picked up from the site of the new Mecca Bingo Hall, off Blue Bridge Lane, became jammed on Fishergate loop.

Police said it appeared the lengthy load had got stuck after one of its rear axles jammed as it attempted to U-turn out of Fulford Roady.

Workers at the site, operated by Wakefield based firm Tolent Construction, said the driver had been unable to reverse out of Blue Bridge Lane, to go out of town and had been forced to take his doomed route.

The Fishergate loop was reduced to one lane until the axle was freed and the vehicle was moved at about 10.30am.
