I AGREE with Dr Charles Kightly who says 'no' to the removal of the city archives from a central location under the control of the city council (May 16).
From time to time I have had to apply to visit the archives.
Obviously, for me, it means a brief walk around the corner, instead of a bus (or several buses) to Heslington.
For people who use the archives regularly that could mean time-wasting frustration because of York's traffic problems plus the expense.
I understand that there is some land available behind the art gallery.
Maybe something modern, thief-proof and fire-proof could be built there, at a fraction of the estimated cost.

...SURELY it is obvious that York should keep its own archives. The university has never felt part of the city.
If money is the problem the city should look for Lottery funding just like the university.
