A 20-year-old woman was taken to York District Hospital suffering minor smoke inhalation following a small fire at her flat.
A neighbour raised the alarm after noticing smoke coming out of her property in Navigation Road, off Walmgate.
A spokesman for the fire service said the woman's breathing condition was made worse as she suffers from asthma. The blaze was believed to have been caused by a candle left unattended in a bedroom.
Firefighters were called to the flat at 10.17pm yesterday.
