MASKED guests graced the dance floor at the magnificent Sunflower Masquerade Ball in aid of St Leonard's Hospice, in York.

Five hundred guests attended the event at the Knavesmire Stand at York Racecourse Entertainment was provided by the Casablanca Boys and local band 200 Miles.

The ball, which had a Venetian Carnival theme, raised £30,000 for the hospice and prompted its organisers to promise another in two years time.

Helen Williams, chairwoman of the organising committee, said: "The atmosphere was absolutely electric, a fantastic evening and the decorations provided by Harrisons Signs were stunning, especially by candlelight.

"We are thrilled to have reached our target of £30,000. Helping to raise the funds was an England rugby shirt which raised £750 in a silent auction and the Superbreak Mini Holiday prize draw which raised more than £3,000.

"Everyone was so generous and we are so grateful to all how donated gifts and prizes, placed advertising and who helped in so many ways.

"All our committee and helpers worked very hard to make this our second ball at the Racecourse for the Hospice a wonderful success.

"Everyone was asking about the next one so we have promised to hold another in two years' time."
