How do Hollywood stars and supermodels get that flawless complexion? MAXINE GORDON finds out...

AIR-BRUSHING is the buzz word among make-up artists to the rich and famous.

You may have heard of the air brush being used to touch up minor flaws in photographs of celebrities - but this air brush is used directly on to the skin to create a perfect look in the first instance.

Instead of paint, the equipment is filled with foundation and a mini-generator creates a controlled jet of pressurised air which sprays the make-up across the skin in a light, even mist. It has been used in some beauty salons for fake tans.

But few beauty therapists on the high street have had the facility to use an air brush in makeovers. Until now.

Estee Lauder will be carrying out air brush makeovers on clients on Friday and Saturday at the Fenwick store, Coppergate, York. I tested the treatment this week and was impressed with the results. It created an even, light and natural look which lasted all day. It takes just seconds to do, which is just as well as I found the cold jet of air on my skin a bit too intense.

But a few moments discomfort has not deterred A-list celebrities from insisting on nothing short of the air brushing technique from their make-up artists.

"Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman will not have anything else," insists Astrid Copley of Estee Lauder, who was trained in air brushing by Hollywood make-up artist Rick Findlater, who developed the technique.

"He wanted to find a way to create perfect make-up in the minimum amount of time. The results were amazing and actors began to insist on being air brushed. Photographers picked up on the technique and it began to be used on models for catwalk work and shoots."

Astrid said while the technique was used widely in the industry, it had yet to filter down to the high street. So women in the York area will have an exclusive chance to try the new technique for themselves this week.

Estee Lauder at Fenwick is now taking bookings for an air brush makeover on Friday and Saturday. The one-hour makeover costs £10, redeemable against any buys on the day.
