MARY Lorson, the East Coast American voice of Madder Rose, hid her Summer 2000 solo debut under the name of Saint Low.
This time, the sleeve refers to Mary Lorson and Saint Low, giving due prominence to Lorson, one of the great American indie rock singers of today, ranked alongside Cowboy Junkies' Margo Timmins and Aimee Mann, but also emphasising Saint Low's developing status as a band. Where the debut was strictly quiet pop noir, giving air to Lorson's delicate thoughts once denied a hearing in Madder Rose, Tricks For Dawn is more diverse. Lorson's lyrics are as emotional and personal as before, her melodic torch songs about drinking, regrets and laments still catch fire slowly but the playing is newly adroit and better focused in its chamber use of piano, violin, cello, brass and harp as well as Velvet Underground-quoting guitar. One final pleasure is former Lemonhead Evan Dando's cameo contribution to Long Way Down. More please, Evan.
