On behalf of City of York Council, Councillor Dave Merrett and myself, I thank all the children, parents and carers who joined in National Walk To School Week.

This event has been a resounding success across the city, as typified by the children of Dunnington, featured in your article 'Walking the school run' (May 22).

I hope those who took part will continue to walk to school.

Research shows that not only is this beneficial for children's health, but it also means they arrive at school more alert.

More controversially, it also reduces congestion and pollution.

But the advantages are that by more children walking to school we are creating 'safer routes to school' and enabling the building of relationships between parents in our communities which it would not be possible to do from the car.
