TEACHER Nigel Smith turned the clock back to the 1950s when he had his hair cut into a short back and sides for charity.
He decided on the Queen's Golden Jubilee theme after deciding to raise money for the people of Malawi and children at Tang Hall Primary School in York responded generously with sponsorship offers.
Mr Smith said he had visited the African country with friends from York last year and found the people to be very welcoming and kind.
Since then, the country had been hit by a severe famine.
"People are dying on the streets - these are people I stayed with," he said.
He said he remembered seeing huge silos of food and was told they were sold off to Zimbabwe to pay off the national debt, leaving the people of Malawi with little to fall back in times of drought.
Mr Smith has told pupils about the crisis back in York and invited barber Howard Beevers, from Selby, to cut his hair. The money raised will all go to the charity, Mahecas, which provides medical and health care support.
