EARLY last year I applied to City of York Council for an exemption from council tax on a property which was in need of extensive repair.
The response I received was appalling, and after receiving a demand for council tax on this property, I made numerous further pleas for exemption, but to no avail.
The last document I received was a court summons for me to appear before magistrates at York.
On my arrival I was ushered to a side room where, this time, my request was heard.
A council official told me my application was granted, and I had nothing to pay.
How wonderful... for them that is.
No apology, no explanation, no nothing. City of York Council abuse the privilege of being able to summons people to court at the stroke of a pen in order to free them from answering legitimate requests.
How many people have paid wrongly levied council tax because the payee feared going to court?
