YORK is to get another rising bollard.

Members of City of York Council's planning committee last night gave the go-ahead for plans to install the £12,000 barrier in Victor Street, Bishophill.

Residents had demanded action to stop motorists illegally rat-running through the road and abusing "access only" restrictions through Victoria Bar. Traffic is prohibited from using the residential streets between Nunnery Lane and Skeldergate, but vehicles frequently ignore the order.

Residents in Victor Street will now have to pay a £20 deposit. In return, they will receive an electronic key which allows them to deactivate the bollard.

York's other rising bollard scheme in Stonebow has been very controversial. It faced a barrage of criticism when several motorists were involved in accidents while trying to drive over it. Plans to install an automatic bollard at the end of Low Poppleton Lane, beside Manor CE School, to create a new bus route, were recently turned down following massive opposition from residents.
