SHERBURN High School have won through to the national finals of the English Schools' Track and Field Cup - after 20 years of trying.

Sherburn's intermediate (Under-16s) boys' team have become the first from the school to ever reach the final, having won through the North Yorkshire championships in York and the regional North East championships held in Jarrow.

They will now compete at Thames Valley Athletics Stadium in Eton, Berkshire, this Saturday.

Furthermore, four of the squad will also represent North Yorkshire as individuals at the English Schools' Athletics Championships a week later.

Intermediates (U17) Chris Clayton and Ben Westerman will compete in the long jump and hammer respectively, while juniors (U15) Ryan Gill and Simon Walton will take part in the 80m hurdles and 400m respectively.

The team competition will see 15 boys, including one reserve, travel south to compete in 14 events against 11 other schools, all of whom are regional champions.

"We've been entering the competition for 20 years now but never got this far before," said head of PE Wayne Isherwood.

"We were unlucky last year when we were second in the regional finals by seven points but this will be the first time a team from our school has reached the national finals.

"It's a tremendous achievement. Most of our team are mainly school not club athletes, but most of the other competitors we will meet will be club-based. The competition will be very tough but just to be there is an outstanding achievement."

Meanwhile, Sherburn's Clayton and Gill both tasted success in the York/Selby Schools' Athletics Finals were held at the Huntington Stadium last Thursday.

Clayton leapt to success in the long jump, while Gill raced to victory in the hurdles.

There were a number a good performances in the competition, with the leading athletes in each event listed below.
