A YORK vicar got an alternative view of the city when she took part in a charity abseiling event - and flipped into an upside down position.

The Reverend Nancy Eckersley, Vicar of St Paul's, Heslington, caused the crowds to gasp when her abseiling effort from the roof of the HSBC building in Parliament Street on Saturday got off to a shaky start and she found herself hanging face down.

But thanks to the calm instructions of the Army supervisors, she managed to right herself before completing her descent - to raise £173 for the Woodlands Respite Care Centre in York, which organised the event.

Afterwards she said: "I think I must have not moved my feet quickly enough over the edge.

"My feet went in the air and I was kind of hanging there. It was not very graceful.

"They told me to bring my feet down lower and then I could start descending in a more orthodox fashion.

"I always felt safe, but I could hear the crowd go 'aahh' when I was hanging there upside down. They all clapped when I made it down."
