A YORK police chief today called for new legislation to curb streakers after four of them ran on to York Racecourse during the Magnet Cup meeting.
Chief Superintendent John Lacy said the Australians had effectively put an end to streaking by fining offenders 1,000 dollars, and suggested something similar in Britain.
"I will be seeking a meeting with the local MP (Hugh Bayley) to discuss this issue," he said.
He said Saturday's meeting - which was attended by 35,000 racegoers - had been a relatively trouble-free, enjoyable event.
But streakers had put their own safety, as well as that of stewards and police officers, at risk by running on to a track where there were horses.
He said several people were arrested for public order offences and would be appearing in court later this week.
