A FLEDGLING train company hit hard by the Hatfield rail crash is now pushing ahead with a £20 million investment programme.

Hull Trains, which runs daily services from Selby to London, is moving from strength to strength after being granted a franchise extension.

The company, which also runs services in East Yorkshire, had only been operating for a month when its services were curtailed by the Hatfield crash, in October 2000.

It suffered again when public confidence in the railways dipped after ten people were killed at Great Heck in February, 2001.

Today managing director Clive Gossop said the company's recovery and development since Hatfield was a "phoenix from the flames" story.

Last month, the company was awarded the right to run its services until 2010 by the Strategic Rail Authority.

It has paved the way for a committed £20 million investment in services and 125mph rolling stock for the East Coast Main Line.

Mr Gossop said: "The investment has started and we are working out our strategy. We are a very customer-focused organisation with extensively trained on-board hospitality staff.

"We have demonstrated that small can be beautiful."
