BED of nails artist Michael Mime was today performing what could be his final act in York, after he vowed to leave when a recent show was ruined by youths armed with a ball-bearing firing air gun.

Michael Mime says he was left with injuries, including a cut to his leg, after the attack.

He claims about 16 pellets were fired, and a nail, which he uses to demonstrate that his bed is real, was thrown at him.

Michael, who was invited to Japan to watch the World Cup Final from his bed of nails, said he is "very close" to leaving York for either Barcelona or Edinburgh.

He said: "I was performing in St Helen's Square last Saturday when it happened, and drew the biggest crowd I've ever had, which was great. But unfortunately the youths were causing problems, putting me at unnecessary risk, a risk I can't take.

"I don't want to leave, I was born here and have many regulars, but feel I don't have much choice.

"I am looking for an assistant and if I can find one I might stay. But the way I feel at the minute I'm set on leaving," he added.

Michael shot to fame when he watched England's World Cup game with Brazil from his bed of nails in Stonegate, York. Anyone who would like to work as his assistant can contact him on 07814 262863.
