SPORTY pupils from Oaklands School in Acomb cycled 20 miles in their latest bid to raise cash for the school's bid to become a sports college.

It was all part of a sponsorship day held to boost the school's campaign to raise £50,000 towards the bid, which has now topped the £30,000 mark.

Deputy head Gavin Cowley said the cyclists biked along the York to Selby cycle path, and were supported by Caroline Emmerson, from City of York Council.

Caroline has just worked with the school on creating a school travel plan to encourage pupils to go to school by bike, on foot or on public transport.

Another group did a sponsored walk in the city and many other events went on in school during the day.

The sponsorship day followed a successful auction on Friday night, hosted by the BBC's Harry Gration and Elly Fiorientini, which raised more than £4,000.

One of the more unusual items auctioned was the offer by music and drama teacher Molly Dodson to provide free entertainment. Her services were bought by York City Football Club chairman, John Batchelor, so fans should look out for her at Bootham Crescent early in the new season.

Other items included two VIP days with Mr Batchelor's British Touring Car Race Team for more than £300, a Liverpool signed football for £200 and Paul Gascoigne's England shirt for over £200.

The fund was given a huge boost when York City Football Club and York City Supporters' Trust each pledged £10,000.

If the school raises £50,000 and its bid is successful, it will receive around £400,000 over the next four years to boost teaching and facilities.

The school will find out in September if another, separate, bid to the New Opportunities Fund has been successful. This would provide a new climbing wall and dance studio.

Anyone wanting to pledge support should telephone the school on 01904 782727.
