Former York League walker Ray Elliot won the fifth annual Ken Rowntree Memorial Race based at British Sugar.

Clocking 65 minutes 22 seconds over three laps he held his handicap over Bradford's Ray Brookes (63-19). Third was Huntington all-star Dennis Jackson (54-12).

In joint fourth spot with Tang Hall's Wally Johnson was John Errington, a former star competitor who may return to the league circuit next season.

Fastest man was Graham Jackson in 49-05.

The Huntington man also had a good return in the recent Redcar sand walking championships. His 55-54 in a seven-miler over hard and soft sand led York CIU team to victory, supported by father Dennis 61-09, Kev Goodwin 67-59 (third handicap spot) and John Errington 70-40.

Regular league walkers Ellis Pickering, Wally Johnson and Andy Heppell also took part.
