MY wife and I moved to York three years ago and took up residence on Mount Vale. Where's that?

You may well ask. When giving directions we usually resorted to "the corner of Trentholme Drive and the Mount".

This worked reasonably well for the first two years until the sign was suddenly changed to "The Mount leading to Trentholme Drive", the Mount being in large, bold letters and Trentholme Drive very much smaller beneath.

I leave it to your imagination as to the volume of traffic, including heavy goods vehicles, which mistakenly ended up down Trentholme Drive after the change.

The Trentholme Drive sign has probably existed since the area was developed in the Fifties and had presumably served the residents well.

It would appear the sign was changed to accommodate a couple of older properties, accessed from Trentholme Drive, but formerly accessed from the Mount.

It was with some relief, a few weeks later, that we observed workmen once again changing the sign to what we hoped would be something more appropriate. Alas no such luck.

The replacement is almost a personal street sign, and poor Trentholme still relegated to small letters beneath.

The change has made little difference to the mis-directed traffic. The latest incident, which prompted this letter, was a large Spanish tour bus in Trentholme Drive seeking the Ramada Hotel, The Mount. I'm sorry P Leeman (Letters, July 25), you will have to wait until we have had a few more changes before the council can get round to your suggestion.

MDR Oldfield,

Mount Vale, York.
