VILLAGERS have given a warm welcome to a business couple who plan to reopen their community pub.

Residents of Husthwaite, near Easingwold, are celebrating the news that their local pub, formerly known as The Blacksmith's Arms, is to reopen its doors.

The pub building has been unoccupied since the business closed almost two years ago, and had fallen into disrepair.

But now Robin and Nicky Jaques have stepped in to restore the historic building to its former glory and plan to reopen early next month.

The former landlords of the nearby Fauconberg Arms Hotel, Coxwold, have renamed the business The Roasted Pepper.

Robin said the restaurant and bar would be something totally new for Husthwaite.

He said: "The village has been really enthusiastic with people calling in to see the developments and changes as work has gone on.

"The pub will serve continental and traditional food, including Spanish tapas using fresh food and local produce, as well as having a bigger bar and new seating areas."

Robin and Nicky gave up the Fauconberg Arms, which they had run for ten years, over a year ago and say they are delighted to be back in business in the area.

Parish council chairman, Carol Munford, said the opening was "very good news" and that she wished the new owners "all the luck in the world".

She said: "It's lovely to think that we will have a village pub once again.

"There was a plan to convert it to housing but a petition collected 300 names of people who wanted to see it remain as a pub.

"The building needed money spent on it and we are glad they are doing so. The parish council backs them whole-heartedly."

Resident Ruth Woodhead said the restoration of the prominent building would help improve the appearance of the village.

She said: "It's good news to a small village because we sometimes miss having a community meeting point that is open to everyone."

The Roasted Pepper has been completely refurbished and now boasts new furniture, more space and patio seating.
