In weather more suited to cricket the York Leeper Hare Football League premier division season kicked off with wins for Pocklington Town, Bishopthorpe United, Malton Bacon Factory and Nestle Rowntree.

League champions Pocklington had ex-Rowntree marksman Brent Terry to thank for their first goal of the campaign.

He put the hosts in front on the half hour against a weakened Old Malton side who have lost one or two players in the close season.

Owen Ellis increased the lead after an hour and Mike Murr wrapped things up when he netted the third ten minutes later.

Nestle Rowntree had the better of their home game with Kartiers but could only manage one goal, scored in the 25th minute by James Vine when he latched onto a through ball from full-back Jamie Carter.

Rowntree 'keeper Darryl Blake made a breathtaking last-minute save to deny the Selby side an equaliser.

Newly promoted Malton Bacon Factory finished the stronger in the heat at Wigginton.

After a scoreless first half the Factory side took the lead within a few minutes of the restart when Simon Collins slotted home.

Five minutes later Nigel Allen made it two and Collins bagged his second, latching onto the rebound after the 'keeper had saved his first attempt, to slot home from a narrow angle.

Wigginton fought back without scoring but Darryl Craggs netted a fourth for the Factory late in the game.

Riccall United, who maintained their premier division status after the resignation of Boroughbridge at the end of last season, lost 1-0 at home to Bishopthorpe, Jack Bolton blasting in from 20 yards midway through the second half against the run of play.
