FANCY a good curry but don't want to travel out of York?

Don't worry, the best curry chef in the north can be found in Nether Poppleton - and that's official.

Mohan Miah, of the Bengal Brasserie, beat off challengers from across the North at a regional food final in Middlesborough.

Mohan, who is 38 and lives in Leeds, has worked for Bengal Brasserie for the last six years, and won the first-ever York Curry Chef of the Year contest in July.

The local competition was organised by the City of York Council and was the only one of its kind in Yorkshire this year.

The local and regional rounds are part of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health's annual, national contest.

City of York Council's involvement is the result of a year-long project to

forge links between the city's curry houses and take-aways and the council's

food and safety unit.
