A MAN appeared before York magistrates today accused of recklessly endangering the lives of 15 people while driving a snatched fork lift vehicle.

Raymond Anthony Wilson, aged 21, no fixed abode, answered only to confirm his name and age.

The first charge against him alleges that he took the vehicle without the owner's consent, drove it dangerously and caused damage to eight motor vehicles in three accidents in which people were injuried.

He faces three more charges, each of which alleges that he caused criminal damage to vehicles, being reckless as to whether lives would be endangered. Some of the vehicles belonged to the police, some were private.

The charges list 15 people as having had their lives endangered: Lesley Croxhall, Peter and Anna Saul, Gary Purcell, Brian, Amanda and Oliver Hackwell, Richard and Amanda Temple, Vera Byrne, Stephen Byrne, Dean Cooper, Kerry Coulson, Martin Smith and Adam Simpson.

Wilson, who was represented by John Howard, was remanded in custody at the request of prosecutor Jane Chadwick. He made no application for bail. York magistrates sent the case to York Crown Court where he will appear on September 7.

Wilson was charged following a police chase through the streets of York, along Fulford Road and on the westbound carriageway of the A64 ring road last Monday.
