HUNDREDS of York City fans took advantage of a unique opportunity to get a close-up look inside the walls of Bootham Crescent.

The doors of the club were thrown open to supporters yesterday, when City hosted its first open day.

Supporters sang the praises of City chairman John Batchelor as they were given the chance to watch the first team train on the pitch.

Youngsters also took part in a skills challenge, organised by York City's Football in the Community department, before fans were given a look around the dressing rooms, board room and hospitality areas.

Fans said they were thrilled to be able to see the club and their heroes at such close quarters.

Season ticket holder Paul Coupland, of Wetherby, said: "This was a great behind-the-scenes look at what John Batchelor is trying to do.

"It was an excellent idea to throw the doors open and, especially on the playing side, everyone is optimistic at the moment."

Neil Wood, of York, who went along with his four-year-old daughter, Charlotte, added: "This kind of thing gets the city together and gets the crowd in. It is absolutely superb. We never came before John Batchelor took over, now I think it is more of a family club. There is an excitement around the place and a party atmosphere. It's great to see."

Geoff Pilmoor travelled from Wrexham to attend the open day. He said: "The club is certainly going in the right direction. John Batchelor has a lot of big ideas."

Members of the York City Supporters' Trust were equally optimistic. Ian Hey said: "This stimulates the interest and gets the kids in. They are the future of the club."

Chairman John Batchelor was delighted with the turnout and the atmosphere. He said: "We need to involve and talk to the people who support the club and the players. We need to talk to the people who pay the bills."
