ON Sunday last month I needed the services of York District Hospital for severe pain in the left eye. I was taken to Ward 27.
Two doctors examined the troubled eye and quickly diagnosed that a hole had appeared in the cornea letting out fluid but when I bent over the pupil had blocked the hole and was causing the pain. The pain could not be stopped until the pressure within was reduced.
I was given a bed and then an injection to quickly reduce the pressure, and I settled down reassured all would be well.
The following day the eye was repaired under a local anaesthetic and then I was privileged to spend four nights in the hands of true angels who made me feel like a VIP.
I had a room to myself, which I like because I am a poor conversationalist and I had a good book. Every morning and afternoon the room was cleaned by a woman who worked very hard despite the a shortage of staff - everything was spotless.
I was given a cuppa at regular intervals. I was told to ring the bell day or night if I needed anything. I requested a shower which was arranged. Each meal was well prepared and nicely presented; one had many choices for each three-course meal.
It is unpleasant to be poorly but at YDH the expert treatment and the friendliness of staff, along with good food, makes the experience easier to bear. I thank all the doctors, nurses cooks and cleaners.
