FEEDBACK on action zones designed to stop pollution spiralling past legal limits is being given to York residents.

Updates on action to improve air quality in the city will be made at upcoming ward committees.

They follow the setting up of special areas where pollution had to be cut to fit in with laws which will take effect in 2005.

Levels of nitrogen dioxide are close to breaching acceptable measurements in Gillygate and Bootham, Holgate Road, Foss Islands Road and Prices Lane, which joins Nunnery Lane.

The gas can be an irritant for people who suffer from respiratory problems.

City of York Council has started to draw up an action plan on how to cut it, with early results being announced at the meetings.

Councillor Derek Smallwood, the council's environment spokesman, said: "It is important that we keep residents involved and up to date with the development of the air quality action plan.

"They have already played a key role in helping the council start to shape its action plan and we are now explaining to residents in ward committees what has been developed so far."
