PLANS for a personal assistant for the leader of City of York Council have been shelved.
A statement released today said the appointment, due to be discussed at a meeting on Monday, had been withdrawn from the agenda.
Leader Coun Dave Merrett said: "I have asked the chief executive to withdraw this report for further consideration.
"What was a proposal for a shared personal assistant with the Liberal Democrat group leader makes no sense if the opposition does not support it."
Liberal Democrat leader Coun Steve Galloway said: "There are other priorities for council taxpayers' money."
The appointment would have been estimated to cost more than £13,000 on a six-month basis. It was requested by Coun Merrett after he admitted he was struggling to keep on top of his workload.
